Optical Drive Netbooks

8 Gigabyte hard drive netbooks
Optical hard disk drives use a magnet to write and read data off a spinning disk. This can be prone to jarring but it can also handle large amounts of data. Optical hard drives are also cheaper to produce. Any netbook you see with a hard drive over 16Gb in size is probably using an optical disk. Some netbooks use optical hard drives that are 250Gb in size, more than enough for most users.

More Information

A hard drive is where your store all of your MP3s and photos and it's also where you install applications like Microsoft Word or Genealogy software. There are two types of netbook drives. Solid state hard drives are smaller, usually under 16Gb in size. They are fast and boot up very quickly. Solid state hard drives don't have any moving parts - so are shock proof. Optical hard drives are larger - anything up to 250Gb - and cheaper. They do have moving parts, and can be affected by movement, but you'd have to really bang it around to have much of an effect.
